When Do You Need to Replace Your Boiler?
If your boiler is over 15 years old then it’s time to start thinking about getting it replaced. You might think your current boiler is running fine and causing no issues but as they age boilers become less efficient and less reliable.
Signs your boiler needs replacing:
- Noisy – If your heating system makes tapping sounds it could be a sign your system needs flushing but if you have noticed vibrating sounds or loud banging then it could mean your boiler has developed a serious fault and might need replacing.
- Odd Smelling – Don’t take any chances if you notice any strange smells coming from your boiler. If you notice that tell-tale egg/sulphurous smell then there’s probably a gas leak and you need to turn off your boiler immediately and call the emergency gas line on 0800 111 999.
- Breaking down – Are you constantly having to call out a plumber to fix your boiler? Then it’s likely high time to get a replacement. A new boiler might seem like a big expense but if you are spending significant amounts of money to keep your old boiler running it could save you money in the long term to invest in a new, efficient model instead.
- Higher bills – When you notice bill increases that can’t be explained then its a sign your boiler isn’t running as efficiently as it should.
- Yellow boiler flame – Your boiler flame should always be bright blue – if it has changed to orange or yellow then you need to get a gas engineer out immediately to diagnose the problem.
- Leaking water – Your boiler should not leak water, if it does then there is most certainly a broken internal component that needs resolving quickly.
- Difficult to repair – As boilers age it becomes more and more difficult to source replacement parts making it less cost efficient to repair an aging boiler unless it rarely breaks down. If your boiler is needing new parts regularly then it will probably be more cost efficient to replace the boiler instead.
- Not performing as well – If your boiler isn’t performing as well as it should such as taking too long to heat the radiators or the pressure is needing adjusting regularly then you should get it checked to see if there is a fixable solution or if a new model would make more sense.
A new boiler will be much more efficient at heating your home, it will be less likely to suffer from faults or breakdowns and will be much better for the environment. The initial outlay will actually save you money in the long term as you won’t need to keep spending money on costly repairs and replacing parts.
